Bilingual education can resist xenophobia and nativism:
- “Xenophobic beliefs about immigrants have targeted various groups throughout history because of their perceived threat to a US national identity, which has legally and socially been defined by whiteness... xenophobic beliefs are underlined by nativist perceptions about who ‘belongs’ in the country.” (Pérez Huber, 2011, p. 379-380)

-"English dominance is a tool to deny education to immigrant students and to reinforce assimilation, colonization, and “hegemonic control” based on one construction of whiteness and Americanness."  (Pérez Huber, 2011, p. 383)
